1964 Porsche 356C Coupe
Chassis No. 219002
Engine No. 714312

Limited Ownership, California Car
Numbers-Matching Engine
Original  Colors as per Porsche Certificate of Authenticity
Offered Manual, Tool Roll, Documentation File & Spare Assembly

The 356 series continued through July 1963, when the 356Cs appeared; these were the last and arguably best of the early pushrod Porsches, available in steadily diminishing numbers through 1965. Apart from new flat-face hubcaps and a still-larger coupe backlight, the Cs were visual twins to the Bs. Even so, constant improvement was again quite evident - including more horsepower and the arrival of standard four-wheel disc brakes.

Offered here is a beautiful example for those considering a striking "driver's" 356C Coupe. Finished in its original colors of Black over Red leatherette upholstery and a Speedster molding down the beltline this 356 C coupe has a good presentation. The cosmetics appear to have aged nicely since a 2001 restoration, a year after the car's second caretaker acquired it from the original owner. It's important to note this C Coupe is an original factory black/red car as confirmed by Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Equipment includes US Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio and antenna, spare with leather strap owner's manual and correct tool roll. A file of several older records and California registration cards from the original owner is also included. As the final alteration of the 356 series the C coupes and cabriolets have always commanded attention and today are becoming increasingly collectable. We welcome and encourage inspections and are happy to answer your questions.

1964 Porsche 356C - $129,500 - Costa Mesa, CA -

This 356 Sunroof Coupe left the factory on July 25, 1963. Very early production "C" was born with a Sunroof and rare crestless hub caps. It was delivered in Europe and made its way to California. The 356 has its original engine and the COA says it was also equipped with the rare Carrera wood steering wheel. Gary Kempton restored the 356 in 2005. We have full documentation of the restoration process as performed. At this time, the color was changed from the original Ruby Red to the more attractive, Champagne Yellow. The black leatherette seats with corduroy inserts were retained per the COA. Vic Skirmants rebuilt the transmission and Neil Goldberg performed significant detail work including adding an aluminum oil cooler for better engine oil temperatures. This 356 Sunroof C also sports "SC" engine modifications including the Solex carburetors. This 356 would make a great high end driver and it's ready to go anywhere.

1964 Porsche 356C - $62,000 - Denver,, CO -

For Sale

1964 Porsche 356 C Coupe VIN 216883

Signal Red Exterior with Black Leatherette Interior

PRICE: $62,000

This is a very good, driver quality, 1964 Porsche 356 C coupe, with all numbers and colors matching, per the COA.  There have been only three owners since new with the original purchase in southern California, it was then sold to the second owner in 1977 and then to the current owner in 1986 when it was transported to Denver, Colorado.  The car has been driven a total of 145,xxx miles and only 27,000 miles in the past 29 years.  It has been carefully maintained by the owners and this is well documented.  This was a Califoria "Black Plate" car and the license plates and registration for the two California owners are included.

Engine

Original C Engine: P711968, was rebuilt in 1986 by the current owner, who is an airplane mechanic, with 129,453 miles driven.  The car has been driven approximately 16,000 miles since the rebuild.  A 1720cc big bore kit was installed together with Weber carburetors.  A recent leak down test on the engine showed 8% to 10% on all cylinders.  A new Sachs clutch disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing were installed recently.  A Performance Automotive ignition system added during the engine rebuild and the muffler was replaced..  The engine starts and runs properly.

Transaxle

Original Transaxle: #74631, shifts properly, new shock absorbers were installed in 1982 .

Body, Paint and Trim

Amazingly, there is no evidence of any rust in the original floor pan, longitudionals, closing panels or other undercarriage sheet metal.  However there was a small patch panel installed below the battery location.  There is no evidence of any collision damage to any exterior panels, all of which are in exceptional condition.  There Is evidence of very minor repairs to the underside of the hood.  The exterior was professionally re-painted, from bare metal, by the second owner in the 1980 to 1982 time period and it is in very good condition, except there are several small stone pits in the front of the hood and lower nose.   Also during the re-paint time frame the chrome was re-plated and numerous parts were replaced because of normal wear.  The paint is very good in driver level condition with only very minor chips and scratches, as previously noted.  The gaps and panel fit are very good.

Interior and Glass

The door panels, headliner, and rear seating area and dash paint are original and in very good condition.  The original seats were restuffed in 2008 by Autoweave Upholstery and the original material was retained.  The windshield was replaced and is in very good condition but does show minor stone pitting.  All other glass is original and also very good.  New, correct type carpets were installed in 1981.

Steering, Suspension, Tires and Brakes

A recent inspection of the steering and suspension revealed no problems.  The brakes were inspected and the front rotors were rebuilt and new brake pads installed.  The rear brake system was found to be in good working condition.  The four wheels are factory stock, chrome plated, and are dated 12/63, 12/63, 12/63 and 9/63, are believed to be original to the car, and are in very good condition.  The tires are Yokohama 185/65R, YK420, and have been used less than 2,000 miles.  However, they are twelve years old and should be replaced.  The spare wheel is painted silver.

Electrical

The lights, except the back up light, and horns function properly as does the original Blauplunkt Frankfort radio.

Miscellaneous

An original and fairly complete tool kit and jack, owners manual and car cover are included.  The car is located in Denver, Colorado and is available for inspection.

1965 Porsche 356C Cabriolet
One Family Matching Numbers Car with Porsche Certificate of Authenticity - Fully Restored - Rotisserie Repaint in Original Color

This 1965 Porsche 356C Cabriolet remains in its original combination of Signal Red with Black Interior and Black Soft top. Originally purchased in 1965 by a newspaper columnist in Pittsburgh, the car was diligently maintained and driven up until the owner's premature death in the late '70s. After her death the family put the car away in storage until one of the family members decided to give the car a full restoration and put it back on the road. An extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration, including an engine rebuild, was completed in 2006. After we received the car we felt it deserved some freshening and a little more attention to detail as it is rare to come across an example with this kind of history. It was disassembled, stripped, and put on the rotisserie for a complete respray in its original color of Signal Red as well as a reconditioning of certain cosmetic items that were not quite up to our standards.

A freshly restored example needing nothing to be driven and enjoyed right away.

1965 Porsche 356C VIN: 219174 West Coast car Numbers matching 356 Club Magazine cover car Summer 2014 Complete with Kardex, books, tools, jack and spare Built in Zuffenhausen, Germany this US spec 356C was finished by the factory on July 8th 1964. It immediately made the long trip to the port of Los Angeles, and then up to Gardner Motors in Fresno, CA. Its first owner, Paul Hendrickson of Fresno, CA, purchased the car with his wife on October 20th 1964. Both were 59 when they bought the Porsche, and would own it until 1980. By 1980 the Hendricksons were 75 years of age and were having a difficult time getting in and out of the little car, so it found a new home with noted 356 restorer, Tim Goodrich of Grants Pass, Oregon. Goodrich would own the car for about four years before selling it to Mike Moran, also of Oregon. During his ownership the car would receive an external repaint, and then an engine rebuild by Tim Goodrich. Moran would own the 356C until 2001, showing it often at numerous 356 events. The next owner, Dave Hamann, who was an employee of Goodrich, purchased the car in 2001. He and is wife Cokie would participate in multiple PCA events with the 356C both in Oregon and California. Time came again in 2006 for the Porsche to find a new home, and it found one with Porsche expert and collector, Sam Cabiglio of California. He would have the fronts seats recovered in black leather by Autos International, and Bosch 6 volt H-4 headlamps installed. Other than the external repaint, seats and headlights this 356C is completely original. It still retains its original engine and transmission. All the glass is original, as is 95% of the trim, and the carpet and the headliner. It has never seen rust, and still has its original battery tray, floor, and factory undercoating. Since arriving at Canepa the 356C has been thoroughly inspected and serviced. It has received over 100 hours of concours level detail preparation, which included a complete hand cleaning from bottom to top, and 5 stages of polishing. The result is an exceptional example of the 356 Coupe that is ready for enthusiastic driving, or the concours lawn. 130 bhp, 1,966 cc DOHC air-cooled horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine with dual Solex 40 PII-4 carburetors, four-speed manual transmission, independent front and rear suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 82.7 in.

  • A very rare and desirable high-performance, four-cam 356
  • Recent comprehensive restoration by top marque specialists
  • Displayed at The Quail in 2014
  • Matching numbers as per Kardex and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity

The 130-horsepower Carrera 2000 GS was at the top of Porsche's product line in 1964. These were very expensive 356s, at a cost of about $7,600 from the factory, nearly twice that of a 1,600-cubic centimeter pushrod-equipped coupe. Ten years after its introduction for racing in the Giant Killer 550 Spyders, the highly complex four-cylinder quadruple-camshaft engine, now in two-liter form, made the 356 C Carrera a very potent road machine. Equipped with a stronger Hausermann clutch and taller American gearing (BBAB), these Carreras were capable of reaching 60 mph in about nine seconds and managing a top speed of 130 mph, with the engine revving to its 7,000 rpm redline in fourth gear.

According to the reference book by Carrera historians Sprenger and Heinrichs, only 101 type-C Carrera 2 coupes were constructed from 1963 to 1965. The coachwork was very similar to that of standard coupes but had a number of subtle modifications. Among them was the use of front bumper guards (without exhaust ports) at both ends. There were also changes to accommodate improved engine cooling, the most important of which was the installation of a pair of small auxiliary oil radiators, mounted one to a side behind the horn grille openings in the nose. The horn grilles themselves were deleted to improve airflow. For reliability, Porsche had adopted a new plain-bearing crankshaft in place of the early Hirth roller-bearing design, which proved fragile as used in previous four-cam engines.

These new Type 587 two-liter motors could be distinguished from the earlier 1600 four-cams by their rectangular camshaft covers and 12-volt electrical systems. The 356 C Carrera was topped by a pair of Solex 40PII-4 downdraft carburetors fed by a single electric fuel pump. The fuel tank was slightly larger (110 liters) than that of the pushrod 356 C. To ease access to the spark plugs, small access panels were installed inside the rear wheel wells. The transmission was a fully synchronized Type 741 four-speed gearbox. The Carrera's improved performance mandated better stopping ability as well; 356 C Carreras were equipped with Porsche's new ATE disc brakes, which had superseded the annular disc arrangement of the 356 B. C-series Carreras had softer torsion-bar springing for greater driving comfort, and a new transverse leaf was mounted below the transaxle to serve as a camber compensator, ensuring that the rear wheels never achieved more than slight positive camber. Carreras were tremendously successful in both road racing competition and rallying. Properly set up, they were immensely durable, and given Porsche's legendary build quality, nearly always finished. Carreras won many International and American amateur racing championships for the marque.

Although the factory Kardex for this attractive Carrera 2000 GS coupe notes that it was completed at Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory on August 8, 1963, it also shows that the car received its initial routine service a day earlier, recorded at 430 kilometers. Such are the vagaries of hand-entered production records of the day. Regardless, its first recorded owner is shown as an H.J. Peters, of Ballidam 27 in Hamburg, Germany. The car returned to the factory for additional servicing in September, October, and December of 1963 and again in March and April the following year. The last entry on the Kardex shows a service performed on August 22, 1964, at 32,198 kilometers.

According to its current owner, the car was offered for sale in 1966 by Ewe Buell through an advertisement in the Washington Post. The car was purchased by Royce William Randall Jr., who owned the Porsche until 1979, at which time it was sold in Denver, Colorado, to Rusty Ferrell, of Salt Lake City, Utah. Mr. Ferrell owned and drove the car sparingly for many years until it was acquired by European Collectibles in Costa Mesa, California in 2013. During the exhaustive, 18-month nut and bolt restoration, it was sold to the current owner.

The engine was outsourced for overhaul to Bill Doyle, one of the country's pre-eminent Carrera engine experts. The brightwork went to marque specialist Victor Miles for plating and polishing. The body was repainted its original color of Slate Gray (6401), and its original beige leatherette and corduroy interior was replaced with attractive new red leather, grey German square-weave carpeting, and black rubber floor mats. This restoration was meticulous, including such items as the correct clear front turn signal lenses. The car was completed just prior to being displayed at last year's The Quail A Motorcar Gathering, one of the highlights of Monterey Car Week. Although it has been run and maintained in a highly regarded collection, the Carrera 2 has only been driven test mileage since completion and presents as new.

This handsome Carrera coupe, with its factory-installed wood-rimmed steering wheel, is nicely optioned with factory-installed fog lamps, a Blaupunkt radio with dual speakers, an inside thermometer, ventilated chrome wheels, and seat belts, and it is supplied with an owner's manual (with correct Carrera 2 supplement), original tool roll, and its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, which confirms the original matching-numbers components. As 2000 GS Carreras come to market infrequently, offered here is the opportunity to acquire a beautifully and fully restored example of the penultimate 356 coupe, one that is proper in all regards.
