This example was delivered new in California in 1965. Whilst out touring in a national park, a rock punctured the sump and subsequently, the owner decided to replace the motor with the new 912, which had extra power (90bhp v 75bhp), as a sportier powerplant. Originally, the livery of this car was Light Ivory #6404 but the owner elected to re-paint it red.

Subsequent, the owners’ daughter was given the car as a wedding present and it was brought to NZ with her and her husband. At some time, there was a change of registration number hence the current one now in situ. After the death of the husband in the late 1990s, the car has been used only sparingly and regular servicing has been maintained. Over 16 years a mere 5000 miles were covered.

When the current owner purchased the vehicle in 2015 it had a WOF and was running, although in need of general re-commissioning which was entrusted to renowned Christchurch restorer, Auto Restorations. Works undertaken include brakes and steering servicing plus an engine out renewal of oil seals and mounts. On tour in January 2017, a cylinder sleeve moved which necessitated a complete re-build with new parts. It is now ready to be run in.

Apart from the foregoing the car remains unrestored. The car retains its original radio (not working) and factory steering wheel. A file of invoices for works both past and present will be included in the sale. Interestingly, the latest issue of “Classic Driver” includes a feature article on the vehicle.

The combination of 356 and open air motoring are far from common in NZ and this example is believed to be the first to come to market here for more than 20 years.

This car is being offered for sale on the 18th June 2017 at The Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland, New Zealand. The auction features many highlights on two wheels and four.
